zen captured
Art effortlessly slips into the landscape of this collector’s Aspen, Colorado residence. The design incorporates the extension of architectural lines into the living landscape and provides seamless transitions between interior and exterior. Three distinct rooms are created – a striking autocourt, a contemplative Zen water garden and a minimalist southern terrace.
Lines of purple sage highlight areas of native grass and become a feature of the autocourt. Paving patterns drawn from the architecture meld indoor and outdoor while rammed earth walls enclose the autocourt and provide separation from neighbors. As if walking on water, a series of stepping-stones lead from an interior hallway and through the zen garden reflecting pool. Blades of bamboo leaves complement robust hostas and cast shadows on the rammed earth walls. This project is the recipient of the Colorado Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects 2006 Merit Award for Residential Design. It is also published in Aspen Magazine, Metropolitan Home magazine and The New 100 Houses book.
